13 - Imperial County

Imperial County borders with Riverside County to the north, the State of Arizona to the east, Mexico to the south and San Diego County to the west.

Originally part of San Diego County, Imperial County was founded on August 7th, 1907.

The area was visited as early as 1540, by Hernando de Alarcon; discoverer of the Colorado River. The area was also visited by Spanish explorers and Catholic friars.

Settlements existed along the Butterfield Stage Route, as early as 1858, but no real development took place until water was brought into the area in 1901.

The county seat of Imperial County is El Centro.

Imperial Valley Transit:
The service area for IVT includes routes in the Primary Corridor area between Brawley, Imperial, IVC, El Centro and Heber to Calexico. The Secondary Service areas include Holtville, Seeley, Niland, Calipatria and Westmorland. The Remote Zones (lifeline service) include Ocotillo, Winterhaven and the East side of the Salton Sea.

Brawley

Brawley is located 210 miles south-east of Los Angeles, 126 miles east of San Diego, 230 miles west of Phoenix, 260 miles south of Las Vegas, and 30 miles north of Mexicali, Mexico.

City of Brawley:
Brawley is a family-oriented community with good schools and 14 beautifully landscaped parks.

The City of Calipatria is located about 150 miles east of San Diego and 100 miles South of Palm Springs.

El Centro

Accessible via Interstate 8, State Highway 86 and State Highway 111, El Centro is located in the southern most part of California; 128 miles east of San Diego, 60 miles west of Yuma, Arizona and 10 miles north of Mexicali, Mexico.

The City of El Centro was named one of the 'hottest cities for entrepreneurs' by Inc. Magazine (May 2006).

Incorporated on April 6th, 1908 the City of El Centro is now the centre of one of Southern California's most promising new commercial and industrial areas.

Holtville

Holtville is a small town located some 120 miles east of San Diego, 225 south-east of Los Angeles and 10 miles north-east of Mexico's Mexicali.

City of Holtville:
Incorporated in 1908, the city of Holtville, or Holton as it was first called, was founded by W.F. Holt; a banker from Missouri who moved to the west for health reasons.

Holtville Chamber of Commerce:
Holtville and its landmark City Park are well-known by travellers on the east-west circuit of Interstate 8. Many sun-seekers stop to visit and stay all winter.

Imperial

City of Imperial:
State Route 111, to the east of Imperial,  is a major North, South  corridor for the Nafta shipping and travel route to the Calexico Port of Entry at the U.S./Mexican International border.

Imperial Chamber of Commerce:
The California Mid-Winter Fairgrounds, located in the heart of Imperial, host the Imperial County's largest event; a ten-day fair, held in February or March each year.

Westmorland

City of Westmorland:
Incorporated in 1934, Westmorland is a small residential community that sits along state Highway 86; 12 miles south of the Salton Sea, 87 miles south-east of Palm Springs, 122 miles east of San Diego, 192 miles south-east of Los Angeles, 261 miles west of Phoenix, Arizona, and 31 miles north of Mexicali.
